Just another day

Just another day - so enmeshed in the work I forget others would perhaps not share the throw away comment.

Prisoner X - I have been managing in a round room after he thought inserting a pen spring into his urethra would be a good idea, now he has a supra pubic catheter and insists the surgery to remove foreign bodies inserted missed something, personality disordered individuals are always fun.

This is a dance not uncommon and we/I have done this for some time.

Prisoner M - I manage in and out of the round room over the years we have known each other, tends to swallow metal that is not on the general menu, cut himself and brake hands against the wall, especially when stressed about anything he can not cope with which tends to be a lot, though we get through most things these days, one time he came to me near the end of the day, close to lock down and asked

"Do you want to kill me now or later?"

"Later suits me Bud, what have you done?"

"Found large metal bolt, broke it into 3 pieces and swallowed it"

"OK."


Prisoner L - psychotic and aggressive, not small, tried to assault me and we had to restrain him, told me he would get me on the outside, committed him to a psych hospital on day of release, not at all happy with this, focused on me as the main target, AWOL'd from hospital (escaped), back in hospital now though it would be interesting to bump into him in the street.

Then there are the others in the Special Needs Unit that are either mentally unwell, personality disordered or a general collection of lack of defence mechanisms and maladaptive coping mechanisms.

And we should not forget the many other prisoners ensconced in the general wings of the prison who I know and continue to have oversight of and input to, or they know of me and hunt me down to ask for my help.



Yep - just another day.
