X-mass in Mt Eden is a special thing.
In the medical men's toilet, over a period of 4-5 weeks, I have noted the slow but steady growth of a daisy coming from the now defunct inmate medical yard. I have many moments hiding in there to consider life, the universe and why I am allowed to have the keys to the drug room. Alongside the development of soon to be very important theories, this daisy has also grown and I feel that our essence and energies have fostered and nurtured each other. As I manage to work out the risk of a prisoner a flower blossom opens and I know that I have stumbled onto the right answer and course of action. There are white and small patches of pink on these Daisies’ and as they have emerged at this time of year I believe they represent the spirit of X-mass.
A Tangled forgotten weed that survives the ravages and abuse of the yard, manages to find a way through, a way out and escapes through a hole in the wall, to the freedom of a prison toilet.
Where a lonely demented psych nurse laments his woes to it.
Mind you it can be difficult some times using the toilet when a female is watching you.
At least that's what sex I figure the spider is.
Over the year I have seen her predecessors up in the far corner web grow large, live, eat, breed and then die. Another soon takes residence and at last count the current spider is the great-great-great-great-great-grand-daughter of the first one I noticed this time last year.
She is a good listener though and hardly buts in, just sits there with several legs knitting me fly parcels which on most days are gratefully received. The special digestive juice she adds gives them that special bite.
I guess the other reason I figured she was female was that most of the males die quicker, eaten after sex, unappreciated for their other abilities and skills - much like human males.
But it is X-mass and so we must allow for these things to be put aside for a time.
So from Daisy, Spidey and me we wish you all a Merry X-mass. Have fun, be safe, drink too much, be a kid.
